To the President and Council of the Royal Society,

We are writing to ask the Royal Society to issue an unambiguous statement about the culpability of the fossil fuel industry in driving the climate crisis.

The Royal Society has thus far failed to condemn fossil fuel companies that are building new infrastructure that will carry the world far beyond 1.5 degrees of warming and that are lobbying across the world to dictate the pace and terms of an energy transition that will protect their profits at the planet’s expense. Irrespective of whether those companies have put a small percentage of their capital expenditure into renewables, they are committing an unprecedented act of violence against humanity, as the UN Secretary General António Guterres has clearly stated. It is imperative that our premier scientific institutions recognise this fact and condemn the agents in question, and the governments that permit their activities, in the strongest possible terms.

Discussions of the climate crisis often assume that global energy needs are a fact of life and that those needs will continue to grow in the twenty-first century. The fossil fuel industry is presented merely as meeting a pre-existing demand, and we are repeatedly told that ‘fossil fuels will remain part of the energy mix for decades to come’. But the community of climate scientists has made clear that the energy demands of the developed world, and particularly of the wealthiest members of society, who cause the bulk of emissions, must be reduced rapidly if we are to retain a habitable biosphere. The lobbying of the fossil fuel industry continues to obscure that message and to persuade governments and media outlets that we can continue with some version of business as usual.

Borrowing techniques from the tobacco industry, fossil fuel companies have played up alleged scientific uncertainties and played down the lethal nature of their products. Those deadly impacts are already being felt around the world, predominantly in countries that have made the lowest contributions to global emissions figures. We call upon the Royal Society to set out the reality of the situation in clear and uncompromising terms, and to lead humanity to an adequate set of policy responses in this area.

Yours,
